<<< Choose a Site Domain Name

Site Domain (Address) Options
Several options are available for defining the address of your site, ranging from subdomains freely offered by CIMnet to a standalone domain you can set up yourself.
  • Option 1: CIMnet Subdomain Allows you to choose a name to appear before CIMnet.ca. For example, http://seniors.cimnet.ca was chosen by the Seniors Resource Network. Discuss your desired CIMnet subdomain with your Site Coordinator and request it using the form below.
Cost to you: None, CIMnet subdomains are offered by CIMnet for free.
  • Option 2: Standalone Domain, purchased and managed by you Allows you to choose your own domain and purchase and manage it yourself. For example, http://www.steannemb.ca was confirmed to be available and then purchased by the Ste Anne site. They arranged for their DNS host to direct the traffic to the CIM Web Service hosting their site and CIMnet set up the Web Service to redirect to the Ste Anne site. Discuss your desired domain to purchase and manage with your site coordinator, purchase it yourself, and then request the Web Service address and redirect using the form below. Alternatively, you can use a web forwarding service to point your purchased domain to your CIMnet subdomain.
Cost to you: Yearly domain registration fee, dependent on registrant price and domain type.
  • Option 3: Domain purchased by you, managed by CIMnet Allows you to choose and purchase your own domain but have it managed by CIMnet. For example, http://www.northernvision.ca was chosen and purchased by the Northern Vision Regional Round Table site. After confirming the address was available, NVRRT purchased it and CIMnet configured the domain to work for the NVRRT site. Discuss your desired domain to be managed by CIMnet with your Site Coordinator and request it using the form below.
Cost to you: Yearly domain registration fee, dependent on registrant price and domain type, plus one-time CIMnet management fee.
  • Option 4: Standalone Domain, purchased and managed by CIMnet Allows you to choose your own domain but have it purchased and managed by CIMnet. For example, http://www.sfx125.ca was chosen by the St. Francois Xavier site as part of celebrations for the 125th anniversary of the community. After confirming the address was available, CIMnet purchased and configured the domain to work for the St. F-X site. Discuss your desired domain to be managed by CIMnet with your Site Coordinator and request it using the form below.
Cost to you: Yearly domain registration fee, dependent on registrant price and domain type, plus yearly CIMnet management fee.

More About Domains
In general, Option 1 is the easiest and is free for you. Option 2 is the next cheapest but will require that you purchase your domain and configure the DNS records yourself. Option 4 is the most expensive but will allow you to have your own domain without having to purchase and configure it yourself. This section explores the differences between Options 2, 3, and 4 in more detail.

Option 2: Purchasing and Managing your own Domain
1. Use a WHOIS tool to confirm the availability of your desired domain.  WHOIS examples: Whois.com, Baremetal.com, Network Solutions, InterNIC, CIRA (.CA only)
2. Choose a registrar, fill out the information they require for purchase, and ensure that any domain-specific qualifications are met (for example, CIRA has Canadian citizenship requirements for .CA domains). CIMnet usually uses a CIRA-registered registrar called Baremetal.com. You can find other registrars in lists made available by CIRA, ICANN, and InterNIC.
3. Fill out the form above to request configuration of the Web Service redirect as well as the IP Address of the CIM Web Service that will be hosting your site.
4. Configure your DNS records (A and WWW) to point to the CIM Web Service IP Address (you should be able to do this using an online tool or by request to your DNS host).  Note that domain changes can take up to 12 hours to propagate through the system.

Option 3: Purchasing your own Domain to be Managed by CIMnet
1. Use a WHOIS tool to confirm the availability of your desired domain.  Examples: Whois.com, Baremetal.com, Network Solutions, InterNIC, CIRA (.CA only)
3. Fill out the form above to request configuration of your domain as well as the IP Addresses of the DNS servers that CIMnet will be using.
4. Update the DNS server addresses for your domain (you should be able to do this using an online tool or by request to your DNS host). At the same time, CIMnet will be configuring your DNS records. Note that domain changes can take up to 12 hours to propagate through the system.

Option 4: Domain Purchase and Management by CIMnet
Confirm your desired domain and use the form above to request it from CIMnet. You will be notified when your domain is working.
